THE SHORTEST DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO LETTERS
It had taken me a good half hour to navigate the one and a half kilometers. It was as if the title of a 'B'-grade city was being disputed by the traffic.I thought for a second, that the queue of vehicles standing before and after me in perfect discipline with none to guide us on our path, deliberately wanted to know why we could not be called a 'A'-grade city? We the residents of our city, had shown absolute patience, immense politeness and tremendous civility while navigating the dusty roads of our city.Without even knowing the cause of having to halt after every few seconds we were bravely plying on to get to our respective destinations. My mind was thinking about the distance I still had to cover, about a kilometer, in order to get to the nearest store for a bottle of water to quench my thirst. The winter sun was glowing bright and the cooler air outside the car did not stand a chance in soothing the inner atmosphere of the car. While the mosquitoes tried their best to get inside there were a thousand trivia floating before my eyes.A small child crossing the road with a huge school bag,a pickup truck filled with farm produce,a huge truck giving way to a motorbike,an empty school bus,two gentlemen drinking tea whilst waiting for their turn to move on in the queue, a small Nano car filled with exactly five people and so on.The Nano car had managed to move ahead along with me and drove along slowly by my side.I was thinking that two more people could be accommodated in it,and the line of thought ended in me wondering about the riddle 'what is the shortest distance between S & E'? Irately unable to recall the exact riddle or its answer I turned around to face the window to my right when the lady sitting in the backseat of the Nano gave me a broad smile.Just then the pick up truck before me moved and I had to return to my steering wheel to move ahead by another two feet, before which I stopped again. And this time, I looked to my right to flash a smile to the lady in the backseat of the Nano, who returned me the smile, while I was left wondering how she had read my mind. From thereon the traffic congestion eased and I made it to my house smoothly with a smile, along with the riddle and the answer to it, that the shortest distance between the two letters S & E is a mile.😊
P.S. The riddle was referring to the word 'SMILE'.
